Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as NGC 455, is a distorted lenticular galaxy located 230 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of +5 degrees.  This magnitude 13 galaxy spans 2.8 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a large diameter of 190,000 light years.

In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Galaxies with Diffuse Filaments.

This object is a tough one to interpret.  It looks to me like a lenticular galaxy has captured a smaller galaxy, stripping out the stars in streams which are seen in the faint loop on the right and the “incoming stream” on the left.

Several more distant galaxies provide a nice backdrop for this interesting Arp object.
